Introducing VISION
The Force team has played a major part in the development of a powerful new toolkit called VISION. The Virtual Integration of Satellite and In Situ Observation Networks. This innovative resource is advancing atmospheric science by integrating satellite and in-situ observations with model data in a seamless and efficient way.
A Suite of Python Tools for Atmospheric Research
VISION consists of a suite of Python algorithms designed to streamline the interface between observational datasets and atmospheric models. It enables researchers to co-locate model output — whether from a few days of regional forecasts or from multi-decade Earth system simulations — to match the exact time and location of observational data.
By aligning these datasets, VISION simplifies the comparison between model predictions and real-world observations, making such evaluations more accurate and insightful. This, in turn, boosts confidence in model performance and supports a deeper understanding of atmospheric processes.
Toward a Digital Twin of the FAAM Aircraft
Force plans to integrate VISION into its broader suite of tools, supporting the creation of a digital twin of the FAAM research aircraft. This digital twin will help maximise scientific output and reduce carbon emissions by optimising flight operations during research missions.
